The MATCH Doctoral Network has been featured in Fibre Systems, in an article highlighting how the project is advancing multicore fiber (MCF) research at a time when AI workloads and hyperscale data centers are pushing conventional optical fibers toward their physical limits.
The article underlines MATCH’s core ambition: training 13 doctoral candidates across 14 partner organizations to deliver a dramatic increase in transmission capacity while reducing power consumption per bit compared to traditional single-core systems.
Fibre Systems also puts a spotlight on the network’s early research outcomes. It highlights the work of MATCH doctoral candidate Konstantinos Papafilippou, who presented research on core arrangement optimization for a 12-core weakly-coupled fiber at the 26th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON 2026) in Prague.
