Supervisors: Prof. D. Marom (HUJI)
The Photonics Devices Group at HUJI (https://scholars.huji.ac.il/danmarom) specializes in conceiving and implementing forward-looking optical devices for telecommunication applications, specifically those enabling advanced fibre-optic networking such as bespoke wavelength-selective switches (WSS). The doctoral candidate (DC) selected for this position will obtain extensive hands-on optics/photonics training—spanning design, simulation, implementation, and lab characterization—for both guided-wave (e.g., fibres and waveguides) and free-space (e.g., imaging and spectroscopy) optics, and their interfacing. One specific innovation we plan to implement is 3-D printing directly onto the fibre facet to achieve operational advantages. Introducing MCF to the optical networking realm poses new challenges, related to the fibre characteristics (mixing/non-mixing) and respective switching modality (joint/independent) as well as towards mitigating the switch’s potential system impairments (e.g., core-mixing, core-dependent losses and channel filtering artefacts) by optimal design. The DC is expected to realize three unique MCF-integrated WSS variants and to further test them in two-month long secondments at partner sites (system lab testing @UST and field-trials @UNIVAQ; a third secondment at @INF planned for studying network provisioning over WDM/SDM). Applicants must possess an M.Sc. Degree from an accredited institution (subject to verification) in a closely related discipline, such as physics, applied physics, or electrical engineering, or are expected to have obtained this degree by Summer 2025. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate background knowledge in—and strong passion for—optics/photonics. The selected candidate will become a member of a dynamic and diverse international university research team and, upon fulfilling the necessary degree requirements, will be conferred a PhD in Applied Physics.
Planned secondment(s):
- INF: Dr. João Pedro M14-15 (2 months duration) “Training in service provisioning over an SDM/WDM ROADM network”
- UST: Prof. G. Rademacher M23-24 (2 months duration) “WSS Integration and evaluation in an SDM system testbed”
- UNIVAQ: Prof. C. Antonelli M29-30 (2 months duration) “Field trial of WSS in RC-MCF transmission”
